Customs officers at the Lesovo border crossing seized a substantial quantity of marijuana from a lorry on Friday, according to the Customs Agency. The narcotic substance, valued at approximately EUR 3 million at judicial prices, was discovered in a vehicle transporting washing machines. The lorry, bearing Romanian registration, arrived at the Lesovo border crossing on Thursday.
In the customs control area, the driver, identified as a Turkish national, presented documentation indicating the transport of washing machines en route from Romania to Turkey via Bulgaria. He declared that he was transporting nothing else. During a comprehensive customs inspection, officers found twenty-five boxes stacked atop the declared washing machines within the cargo.
These boxes contained a total of 338 vacuum-sealed packages of dry, green leafy substance. Field drug tests conducted on the material yielded positive results for marijuana. Authorities subsequently seized a total of 362 kg of marijuana.
The driver has been detained, and pre-trial proceedings have commenced regarding the incident. The Regional Prosecutor’s Office in Yambol is scheduled to submit a request to the court for the imposition of a remand measure of detention in custody.
