Justice Minister Yankulov Urges Immediate Removal of Acting Prosecutor General, Calls for Swift Judicial Reform

Caretaker Justice Minister Andrey Yankulov stated that the judicial system should not remain under the leadership of an acting Prosecutor General who, in his view, operates contrary to law and morality. Speaking on Monday, Yankulov commented that the recent elections have established a clear victor in Progressive Bulgaria and highlighted significant losses for established political entities associated with the judiciary’s perceived corruption. Yankulov emphasized that a crucial element for Bulgaria’s future is converting the public’s evident support for judicial reform into concrete political action.

He suggested that the poor showing for parties that actively opposed judicial change indicates that citizens view reform as an inevitability. According to the minister, restoring legality within the prosecution service should be the initial step toward reform and should not be delayed pending the election of a new Supreme Judicial Council (SJC). While the swift election of the SJC is important, Yankulov stressed that the process must prioritize proper procedure over speed.

He argued that safeguards must ensure the selection of honest professionals who prioritize the public interest over party affiliation, thereby maintaining an independent judiciary. The minister suggested that the SJC and its Prosecutors’ College had ample time over the preceding two months to recognize the situation and take appropriate action. Failing to do so, Yankulov warned, the new parliament might address the matter through standard legislative means early in its session.
