Minister Gurov Commemorates April Uprising Anniversary

Caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gurov addressed the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising on Monday, stating that the concept of freedom has evolved from a matter of capability to one of choice. Gurov reflected on the historical context, noting that 150 years prior, revolutionaries rose up to secure the right for all Bulgarians to make their own decisions—a right, he observed, that Bulgarians exercised recently. The Prime Minister emphasized that freedom is not a singular event but an ongoing commitment.

He stated, “It is a necessity to stay awake, to think, to be vigilant, and not to be silent if we have to defend our freedom,” according to Gurov’s post. The message served as a tribute to the heroes of the April Uprising. In addition to his written remarks, Gurov published a video clip on Facebook.

This video featured him reciting a letter originally written by the Bulgarian revolutionary and poet Hristo Botev to his contemporaries, including Ivan Grudov, Ivan Kavaldzhiev, and Georgi Stranski. The statements from the minister underscore the enduring importance of civic vigilance and the active defense of national liberties, linking contemporary civic action to the historical struggle marked by the April Uprising.
