To commemorate the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising, Sofia Municipality hosted a historical educational game titled “In the Footsteps of the Heroes” in Boris Garden Park. The initiative involved groups of students from local schools and took place along the Prominent Bulgarians alley. The activity was designed as an immersive learning experience, challenging participants as they navigated the area to locate monuments dedicated to national heroes.
The students, organized into teams, engaged in answering detailed questions pertaining to Bulgarian history. According to Deputy Mayor Desislava Zhelyazkova, who oversees education and urban development, the event serves to connect participants with the spirit of a significant historical act, encouraging them to experience history beyond traditional classroom settings. The game required participants to follow established routes that linked key revolutionary figures, including Vasil Levski, Hristo Botev, Zahari Stoyanov, Todor Kableshkov, and Georgi Benkovski.
By successfully answering historical queries, the teams collected segments forming a symbolic map representing the uprising. Upon completing the walk, each team composed a short message addressed to the Bulgarian people, inspired by their newly acquired knowledge. The concept was developed with the collaboration of history teacher Emil Jassim and falls under the cultural programming of Sofia Municipality, implemented in partnership with Sofia’s Regional Education Directorate.
The event successfully merged historical commemoration with interactive education, allowing the community to trace the footsteps of Bulgaria’s past revolutionary figures.
