Gurov Sees Conspiracy against Interior Ministry Secretary General

Caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gurov publicly supported Georgi Kandev, the acting Secretary General of the Interior Ministry, stating that both he and the caretaker government stand fully behind Kandev. Gurov’s remarks followed a statement from Kandev, who claimed he faced pressure to resign due to false testimonies presented against him at the Sofia City Prosecution Office by individuals, including one known as “Kartofa.”

In his address, Gurov characterized the situation as a “shameful attempt at revanchism.” He asserted that a conspiracy had begun against the Secretary General following actions taken to halt attacks on democracy and secure funds intended to undermine elections. Gurov named a former police chief and the businessman “Kartofa” as allegedly involved in this plot.

The Prime Minister described the situation as revenge, issuing a warning to those who might attempt to undermine legal processes. Gurov specifically cited the Sofia City Prosecution Office, naming prosecutor Emiliya Rusinova, who he linked to Petyo ‘The Euro’ Petrov, and described her as the prosecutor overseeing the caretaker government’s parliamentary immunities. Addressing political opponents, Gurov stated that the government was aware of their efforts and expressed confidence in public support.

Further details emerged regarding the involvement of prosecutor Rusinova. Caretaker Interior Minister Emil Dechev previously reported that in 2021, Rusinova had traveled with Petrov to North Macedonia. According to information reportedly received at the Interior Ministry, Rusinova reportedly crossed the border multiple times on these occasions, accompanied by several individuals, sometimes including Petrov.
