Gurov Sees Conspiracy against Interior Ministry Secretary General

Caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gurov publicly affirmed his and the entire caretaker government’s support for Georgi Kandev, the acting Secretary General of the Interior Ministry. Gurov stated that the support for Kandev was expected from all honest Bulgarian citizens. Gurov’s statement followed a public declaration by Kandev on Facebook, where he alleged facing pressure to resign due to false testimony provided against him at the Sofia City Prosecution Office by individuals, including one nicknamed “Kartofa.” In his remarks, Gurov characterized the situation as a “shameful attempt at revanchism.” The Prime Minister asserted that a conspiracy targeting the Secretary General had emerged after actions taken to halt attacks on democracy and secure funds allegedly used to undermine elections.

Gurov specifically named a former police chief and the businessman “Kartofa” as being involved in this alleged conspiracy. He described the situation as an act of revenge and a warning to those who are prepared to act courageously within the law. The Prime Minister directed his comments toward the Sofia City Prosecution Office, naming prosecutor Emiliya Rusinova, who Gurov associated with Petyo ‘The Euro’ Petrov and the oversight of parliamentary immunities within the caretaker government.

Furthermore, Gurov addressed perceived opposition, stating, “we see you. And all of Bulgaria sees you. We are not afraid.

We outnumber you.” The article provides context on Petrov, identifying him as a known power broker linked to influencing the Bulgarian judiciary. Earlier, caretaker Interior Minister Emil Dechev had reported that in 2021, Rusinova had traveled with Petrov to North Macedonia, and that she had reportedly crossed the border multiple times, accompanied by several individuals, sometimes including Petrov.
