More Measles Cases Reported, Bringing Total to 165

Six additional instances of measles have been reported in Bulgaria, elevating the cumulative count to 165 as of April 23, according to data released by the Ministry of Health. The recent spread was documented across several regions: two new cases were identified in Vratsa, two in Lovech, and one each in Pleven and Sofia. In response to the outbreak, authorities implemented measures to control the spread of measles.

The initial eight confirmed cases were identified by the Health Ministry on March 19, originating in the Vratsa region. Following these initial reports, public health officials mandated emergency immunization efforts for all children who had not received the necessary vaccinations. Addressing the ongoing health concern, Iliya Tasev, Director of the Public Health Protection, Health Control and Patients’ Rights Directorate at the Ministry of Health, provided an update on preventative measures.

Tasev stated that since early March, 20,000 children had received vaccination doses for measles, mumps, and rubella. These continuous efforts highlight the ongoing commitment of the Bulgarian health sector to managing the measles outbreak. The Ministry continues to monitor the situation closely to mitigate further transmission and ensure comprehensive vaccination coverage across the population.

Public health advisories remain in place to encourage timely immunization and maintain vigilance against vaccine-preventable diseases.
