Following statements indicating that the acting Secretary General of the Interior Ministry, Georgi Kandev, faced pressure to resign, Continue the Change (CC) leader Assen Vassilev issued a statement via Facebook. Vassilev asserted that in Bulgaria, individuals who are simply doing their professional duties are allegedly targeted with false accusations. He labeled the reported threats against Secretary General Kandev as “absolutely scandalous.”
Vassilev further stated that he believes the only path to a prosperous, just, and European Bulgaria involves the immediate replacement of the Supreme Judicial Council and a comprehensive overhaul of the judicial system.
His commentary was accompanied by a photograph of Kandev, captioned with the hashtag “I won’t go home.”
The controversy gained traction after Kandev himself posted a video message on Facebook. In the video, he mentioned receiving a directive to leave his post but affirmed that he would not yield to threats or clandestine negotiations. The context surrounding these reports involves allegations that certain individuals, including one identified by the nickname “Kartofa,” submitted false testimony against Kandev at the Sofia City Prosecution Office on Thursday.
The incident highlights ongoing tensions within Bulgaria’s governmental and judicial sectors. The statements from both Kandev and Vassilev suggest deep divisions regarding institutional integrity. For someone to maintain their position while doing the necessary work, according to Vassilev, requires overcoming systemic hurdles, suggesting that their professional actions are viewed with suspicion by certain elements.
