, Bulgaria! Accuse Prosecutors of Being Used to Target Reformers After Pressure Claims by Interior Ministry Official

The Yes, Bulgaria party has accused prosecutors in Bulgaria of being used to target officials involved in institutional reform. These statements followed claims made by Interior Ministry acting Secretary General Georgi Kandev, who reported experiencing pressure and false testimony regarding unspecified wrongdoing. Speaking at a party briefing, Yes, Bulgaria co-chair Ivaylo Mirchev asserted that the prosecution service was being utilized as part of what he termed the “Borissov-Peevski model.” Mirchev stated that this model continues to function, alleging that the prosecution is once again being used against reform efforts.

His comments followed Kandev’s video statement on Friday, where he detailed receiving calls from unknown numbers warning him, and asserting that false testimony was being manufactured at the Sofia City Prosecution Office, an attempt he believes is aimed at forcing his resignation. Mirchev suggested that the current pressure against Kandev, caretaker Interior Minister Emil Dechev, and caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gurov constitutes retaliation for their previous efforts to ensure fair elections. Furthermore, the party alerted the prosecution service regarding a journalistic investigation by BIRD, which alleged recordings of bribery involving former Supreme Administrative Court chairman Georgi Cholakov.

Bozhanov called for thorough audits of senior magistrates’ assets, including acting Prosecutor General Borislav Sarafov. The party also announced plans to request a parliamentary hearing concerning Delyan Peevski’s private jet travel, which allegedly was not declared in his financial statements. These actions indicate the party views the judicial and governmental structures in Bulgaria as being manipulated to suppress reform efforts.
