, Bulgaria! Accuse Prosecutors of Being Used to Target Reformers After Pressure Claims by Interior Ministry Official

The Yes, Bulgaria party accused prosecutors in Bulgaria on Friday of being used, once again, to target officials involved in institutional reform. These accusations followed statements by Interior Ministry acting Secretary General Georgi Kandev, who claimed he was facing pressure and being smeared with false testimony regarding unspecified wrongdoing. Speaking at the party’s headquarters, Yes, Bulgaria co-chair Ivaylo Mirchev asserted that the prosecution service was being utilized as part of what he termed the “Borissov-Peevski model,” referencing GERB leader Boyko Borissov and Movement for Rights and Freedoms leader Delyan Peevski.

Mirchev stated that this model continues to function, with the prosecution being used to target those working on reforms. These comments followed Kandev’s Facebook video earlier that day, where he detailed receiving calls from unknown numbers alleging false testimony against him at the Sofia City Prosecution Office, which he believes aims to force his resignation. Mirchev suggested the current pressure against Kandev, caretaker Interior Minister Emil Dechev, and caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gurov was an act of retaliation.

Furthermore, Mirchev announced that he and co-chair Bozhidar Bozhanov had submitted an alert to the prosecution service concerning a journalistic investigation by BIRD. This investigation alleged recordings involving former Supreme Administrative Court chairman Georgi Cholakov and an intermediary allegedly arranging court decisions for bribes. Mirchev criticized Cholakov, and Bozhanov called the court “the court of those in power.” The party is also pushing for a parliamentary hearing regarding whether Delyan Peevski was using private jets without declaring the travel in his financial interests statement.
