An honorary consulate of the Russian Federation was established in Novi Sad, a northern Serbian city, according to local media reports on Friday. Dusan Bajatovic, the director of Srbijagaz and a senior official of the Socialist Party of Serbia, was appointed the consulate’s consul. The opening ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including Patriarch Porfiry, Russian Ambassador to Serbia Aleksandr Botsan-Kharchenko, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko, Dina Vucinic, Speaker of the Novi Sad Assembly, and former minister Aleksandar Vulin.
During the event, Bajatovic addressed the relationship between Serbia and Russia. He noted that while Serbs recognize a strong bond, he stated that there remains a lack of comprehensive knowledge regarding Russia’s natural beauty, scientific advancements, and cultural depth. He also referenced the Russian Historical Society, which he mentioned was established with assistance from Aleksandar Vulin and aims to safeguard historical narratives.
Bajatovic emphasized the shared Orthodox heritage between the two nations. Furthermore, he announced plans to foster greater academic and cultural exchange. He stated the goal of opening a Russian school, asserting that such an institution would promote knowledge from Russia, countering any perceived bias toward Western sources of culture and learning.
The establishment of the consulate marks a formal deepening of diplomatic and cultural ties between the two countries in Novi Sad.
