An honorary consulate of the Russian Federation was opened in the northern Serbian city of Novi Sad, according to local media reports on Friday. Dusan Bajatovic, Director of Srbijagaz and a senior official of the Socialist Party of Serbia, was appointed as the consulate’s consul. The opening ceremony was attended by several prominent figures, including Patriarch Porfiry, Russian Ambassador to Serbia Aleksandr Botsan-Kharchenko, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko, Novi Sad Assembly Speaker Dina Vucinic, and former minister Aleksandar Vulin.
During the event, Bajatovic emphasized the historical and cultural ties between Serbia and Russia, stating that the relationship is one of brotherhood. However, he noted that, beyond this shared connection, much remains unknown to the Serbian public regarding Russia’s culture, science, and natural heritage. He highlighted the role of the Russian Historical Society, which he stated was established with the assistance of Aleksandar Vulin, with the stated aim of preventing historical revisionism.
Bajatovic further announced plans for increased student exchange and cultural cooperation between the two nations. He emphasized the importance of educational exchange, noting the interest in acquiring knowledge from Russia. According to Bajatovic, the establishment of a Russian school in the region is intended to showcase Russian knowledge and culture, countering the belief that all sources of learning originate from other regions.
The consulate’s opening marks a formalized commitment to strengthening bilateral ties through cultural and educational channels in Novi Sad.
