An honorary consulate of the Russian Federation was opened recently in Novi Sad, a northern Serbian city, according to local media reports. Dusan Bajatovic, the director of Srbijagaz and a senior official within the Socialist Party of Serbia, has been appointed as the consulate’s consul. The opening ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including Patriarch Porfiry, the Russian Ambassador to Serbia, Aleksandr Botsan-Kharchenko, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko, Novi Sad Assembly Speaker Dina Vucinic, and former minister Aleksandar Vulin.
During the event, Bajatovic highlighted the historical relationship between the two peoples, stating that Serbs and Russians share a deep bond. However, he also noted that, beyond this connection, the general public has limited knowledge regarding Russia’s natural beauty, scientific achievements, or overall modern development. Bajatovic emphasized the importance of cultural exchange, mentioning that the Russian Historical Society was established with assistance from Aleksandar Vulin, with the stated aim of countering historical revisionism.
He announced plans for enhanced student exchanges and broader cultural cooperation between Russia and Serbia. Furthermore, he stated the intention to open a Russian school, designed to promote Russian knowledge and counter the perception that all culture originates from Western sources. The consulate’s establishment underscores efforts to deepen bilateral academic and cultural ties between Serbia and Russia in Novi Sad.
