Has Sufficient Reserves of Aviation Fuel, Says Transport Commissioner

During his participation in the Delphi Economic Forum, the European Union Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, addressed the region’s energy security and economic outlook. Regarding the aviation sector, Tzitzikostas confirmed that the EU maintains sufficient reserves of aviation fuel, capable of sustaining operations for up to three months. He suggested that recent flight cancellations reported by some airlines are primarily attributable to escalating fuel costs rather than actual supply shortages.

The Commissioner characterized the current energy crisis as unprecedented in scale, predicting a challenging summer period ahead. Furthermore, he warned that the geopolitical instability stemming from the Middle East could lead to severe global ramifications if the conflict is not resolved swiftly. In other areas, Tzitzikostas detailed the EU’s proactive defense measures, highlighting the military mobility plan which involves modernizing 500 strategically vital sites across the continent.

Economically, he forecast a notable downturn in tourist arrivals originating from Asia traveling to Europe. The Delphi Forum continues through Saturday, April 25, hosting over 200 discussions and panels featuring approximately 1,200 international speakers. Participants represent diverse sectors, including governments, international organizations, academia, and business, with discussions centered on geopolitics, economic trends, and technological transformations.
