, Bulgaria! Accuse Prosecutors of Being Used to Target Reformers After Pressure Claims by Interior Ministry Official

The Yes, Bulgaria party accused prosecutors on Friday of being used, once again, to target officials involved in institutional reform within Bulgaria. The accusations followed statements by Interior Ministry acting Secretary General Georgi Kandev, who claimed he faced pressure and was subject to false testimony regarding unspecified misconduct. Speaking at the party’s headquarters, Yes, Bulgaria co-chair Ivaylo Mirchev asserted that the prosecution service was being utilized as part of what he termed the “Borissov-Peevski model.” Mirchev stated, “Obviously, the Borissov-Peevski model continues to function and is looking for its place, while the prosecution is once again being used, as before, to hit those who are working.” These remarks followed Kandev’s earlier video statement on Friday, where he detailed receiving calls from unknown numbers alleging that individuals were providing false testimony against him at the Sofia City Prosecution Office.

Kandev indicated that the perceived goal was to compel his resignation, a claim he refuted. Mirchev suggested that the current pressure against Kandev, caretaker Interior Minister Emil Dechev, and caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gurov represented retaliation for their efforts to ensure fair elections. He asserted that the prosecution and the “Peevski-Borissov model” were attempting to counter these efforts.

Furthermore, Mirchev announced that he and co-chair Bozhidar Bozhanov had submitted a report to prosecutors concerning a media investigation alleging recordings of conversations between former Supreme Administrative Court chairman Georgi Cholakov and an intermediary regarding alleged bribes for court decisions. Bozhanov added that Yes, Bulgaria intended to request a parliamentary hearing for the interior minister regarding another media report questioning whether Delyan Peevski repeatedly used private jets abroad without declaring the travel in his financial interests statement.
