The Yes, Bulgaria party accused prosecutors on Friday of being used to target officials involved in institutional reform. These allegations followed statements by Interior Ministry acting Secretary General Georgi Kandev, who claimed he was facing pressure and subjected to false testimony regarding unspecified misconduct. Speaking at a briefing, Yes, Bulgaria co-chair Ivaylo Mirchev stated that the prosecution service was being utilized as part of what he termed the “Borissov-Peevski model.” Mirchev asserted that this model remained operational, with the prosecution being used, as previously, to target reform advocates.
His remarks followed Kandev’s earlier claim on Facebook that he had been pressured and warned to resign, alleging calls from unknown numbers regarding false testimony at the Sofia City Prosecution Office. Kandev maintained that the objective was to force his resignation and that he would resist. Mirchev suggested that the current pressure against Kandev, caretaker Interior Minister Emil Dechev, and caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gurov was retaliatory, stemming from their efforts to ensure fair elections.
He deemed the use of the prosecution and the “Peevski-Borissov model” to strike back unacceptable. Furthermore, Mirchev announced that he and fellow co-chair Bozhidar Bozhanov had submitted a report concerning a media investigation alleging that former Supreme Administrative Court chairman Georgi Cholakov was involved in exchanging court decisions for bribes. Bozhanov called for thorough checks by the prosecution service and the Inspectorate to the Supreme Judicial Council, including reviewing the assets of senior magistrates.
He added that Yes, Bulgaria would also request a parliamentary hearing regarding media reports questioning whether Delyan Peevski used undeclared private jets for international travel in Bulgaria.
