Dechev: “Old Cops Are Using Dirty Tricks to Neutralize Interior Ministry’s Secretary General”

Acting Interior Minister Emil Dechev accused elements within the police force of employing tactics to undermine acting Secretary General of the Interior Ministry, Georgi Kandev. Dechev alleged that these actions were designed to neutralize Kandev’s position. Earlier, Kandev released a video message stating that he had faced pressure to step down, citing instances where false testimony was allegedly presented against him at the Sofia City Prosecution Office.

Acting Prime Minister Andrey Gurov echoed concerns regarding political maneuvering, describing the situation as a “shameful attempt at revanchism.” Gurov noted that the alleged conspiracy against the Secretary General emerged after efforts were made to halt democratic attacks and recover millions of euros intended for election purposes. Minister Dechev publicly voiced his support for Kandev, asserting his confidence in his integrity as the future interior minister. Dechev suggested that the current controversy surrounding Kandev is a “fabricated scandal.” Furthermore, the minister highlighted the recent efforts of the caretaker government and the Ministry of the Interior, noting that within two months, they had demonstrated a commitment to minimizing electoral crimes, which Dechev characterized as a “plague on Bulgarian democracy.”

Dechev framed this effort as a significant struggle against forces attempting to undermine the will of the Bulgarian electorate during elections.

He added that in this conflict, their adversaries possess powerful allies within key judicial positions.
