Dechev: “Old Cops Are Using Dirty Tricks to Neutralize Interior Ministry’s Secretary General”

Acting Interior Minister Emil Dechev accused elements within the police force of employing tactics to undermine Georgi Kandev, the acting Secretary General of the Interior Ministry. The dispute escalated following statements made by Kandev, who asserted in a video message that he was subjected to pressure to resign based on false testimony presented at the Sofia City Prosecution Office. Acting Prime Minister Andrey Gurov characterized the situation as a “shameful attempt at revanchism.” Gurov stated that this alleged conspiracy arose after the government successfully intervened to curb attacks on democracy and recover funds misused during elections.

Dechev publicly voiced his support for Kandev, dismissing the ensuing controversy as a fabricated scandal. He emphasized that the Ministry of the Interior had demonstrated resolve in limiting electoral misconduct, which he described as a significant threat to Bulgarian democracy. The Minister further claimed that the government’s recent efforts represented a “dangerous struggle” against forces attempting to subvert the will of the electorate, noting that his adversary possesses allies within the judiciary.

Through these statements, both Dechev and Gurov framed the internal dispute as part of a larger political battle over the integrity of the state’s institutions and the electoral process.
