Water Reservoirs Filled at 79% of Combined Capacity

As of April 27, the total volume of water stored in Bulgaria’s larger, multipurpose reservoirs reached 5,141.6 million cubic meters. According to the Ministry of Environment and Water, this figure represents 78.67% of the combined holding capacity and marks an increase of approximately 17% compared to the previous year. The Ministry oversees water resources across 52 major reservoirs.

Several facilities are operating near or at maximum capacity. The Kamchia, Asenovets, and Pchelina reservoirs are currently at 100% capacity, while others, including Srechenska Bara, Hristo Smirnenski, and Yovkovtsi, are above 90%. Furthermore, the Kamchia, Asenovets, Pchelina, and Pancharevo reservoirs are reported as overflowing.

Due to the arrival of spring and anticipated high water inflows, managing companies are implementing preventive water releases to maintain optimal levels and accommodate increased flow. Looking ahead, river levels are projected to decrease or remain stable by April 28, though rainfall on April 29 and 30 is expected to cause rises that are anticipated to remain below official warning thresholds. The Ministry advised local authorities to strictly adhere to the Flood Risk Management Plans 2022–2027 and to monitor official hydrometeorological forecasts.

Furthermore, the Ministry has released a comprehensive report detailing 15 recommendations intended to guide the long-term national water management policy.
