Cultural Centre in Skopje to Host Exhibition Marking 150th Anniversary of April Uprising

The exhibition, “For the Freedom of a Nation,” is scheduled to open at the Bulgarian Cultural and Information Centre in Skopje on Tuesday. Organized by the St. St.

Cyril and Methodius National Library and the State Archives Agency, the display commemorates the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising. The exhibition features over 130 primary source documents, including protocols, letters, telegrams, appeals, and certificates. These materials document the preparation, progression, suppression, and aftermath of the uprising.

Furthermore, the collection provides insight into the international response to the events. Included Ottoman documents offer perspectives from both local and central Ottoman authorities regarding the period. Among the authors represented in the materials are notable figures from the era, such as Hristo Botev, Vasil Levski, Lyuben Karavelov, and Stefan Stambolov.

The display showcases both widely recognized and less documented items, tracing the events across various revolutionary districts and detailing the role of the Bulgarian emigre community and the international reaction. The exhibition was formally inaugurated in Sofia on April 20. It is held under the patronage of President Iliana Iotova and is financially supported by the Ministry of Culture.

This comprehensive cultural exhibit offers a detailed look at the historical context surrounding the uprising.
