Cultural Centre in Skopje to Host Exhibition Marking 150th Anniversary of April Uprising

The “For the Freedom of a Nation” exhibition, a joint undertaking by the St. St. Cyril and Methodius National Library and the State Archives Agency, will commence at the Bulgarian Cultural and Information Centre in Skopje on Tuesday.

This display commemorates the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising. The comprehensive exhibition features an archive of over 130 historical documents. These materials—which include protocols, letters, telegrams, appeals, and certificates—provide detailed insight into the preparation, progression, suppression, and lasting consequences of the Uprising.

Furthermore, the collection illuminates the international response to the events, while integrated Ottoman documents offer a perspective from both local and central Ottoman authorities. The documentation credits prominent figures of the era, such as Hristo Botev, Vasil Levski, Lyuben Karavelov, and Stefan Stambolov. The display balances well-known historical records with lesser-documented items, some of which are being shown for the first time.

The scope covers events across all revolutionary districts and examines the vital role played by the Bulgarian emigre community and the international community. The exhibit was previously inaugurated in Sofia on April 20. It is held under the patronage of President Iliana Iotova and receives financial support from the Ministry of Culture.

The display serves as a significant cultural resource, meticulously chronicling a pivotal moment in Bulgarian history.
