Dechev: “Old Cops Are Using Dirty Tricks to Neutralize Interior Ministry’s Secretary General”

Acting Interior Minister Emil Dechev alleged on Friday that established police elements are employing repetitive tactics to undermine and neutralize Georgi Kandev, the acting Secretary General of the Interior Ministry. Earlier in the day, Kandev stated in a video message that he faced pressure to resign due to false testimonies being presented against him at the Sofia City Prosecution Office. Acting Prime Minister Andrey Gurov subsequently characterized the situation as a “shameful attempt at revanchism.” Gurov noted that following efforts to halt attacks on democracy and recover millions of euros misused to undermine elections, a conspiracy against the Secretary General had begun.

Dechev publicly voiced his support for Kandev, asserting complete confidence in his integrity. He stated that the future interior minister would soon manage the significant responsibility of resolving this fabricated scandal. Dechev also highlighted the commitment of the caretaker Government and the Interior Ministry, noting that within two months, they had successfully minimized electoral crimes, which he termed “a plague on Bulgarian democracy.” He attributed this success to significant effort and resolve, describing the struggle as a defense against forces attempting to subvert the will of the Bulgarian electorate.

Dechev further alleged that their adversary possessed powerful allies within the judiciary.
