Deputy Energy Minister Teodora Georgieva stated that if the European Union prioritizes energy security, it must establish robust support mechanisms. Speaking at the 11th Delphi Economic Forum in Greece, she noted that geopolitical crises, such as the energy issues stemming from the war in Ukraine and current tensions involving Iran, repeatedly underscore the necessity for unified European solutions and leadership. Georgieva emphasized that collective action is vital for resolving systemic challenges.
She highlighted Bulgaria’s strategic moves, including signing a 25-year gas agreement with Azerbaijan, to secure reliable natural gas supplies. She pointed to the operational significance of the Greece-Bulgaria Interconnector, noting its use for reverse flow into Ukraine. Furthermore, she detailed Bulgaria’s efforts to develop the Vertical Gas Corridor, which enhances the transport of liquefied natural gas from Greece to Ukraine, thereby solidifying the nation’s position as a regional energy factor.
In response to the growing importance of this infrastructure, the minister stressed that the EU needs mechanisms to support such strategic energy projects. A joint letter is reportedly being prepared by participating ministers, advocating for enhanced European support and competitive pricing for the entire Greece-to-Ukraine route. Regarding the energy mix, Georgieva maintained that natural gas remains a crucial component and cautioned against exclusive reliance on renewable sources.
She advised that while hydrogen development is possible, its timeline should be determined by market forces. Overall, she underscored the need for long-term planning, the development of nuclear energy, and a cohesive approach to securing the continent’s energy future.
