PM Says His Party May Stay in Government If No-Confidence Motion Passes

Romanian Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan stated on Thursday that should a no-confidence motion against his administration pass, the primary path for his National Liberal Party (PNL) would be to retain a role within the government, specifically excluding any coalition with the Social Democratic Party (PSD). However, Bolojan did not rule out the possibility of the PNL shifting to the opposition to establish a “pole of modernization” alongside other political entities. Speaking to Romanian public television TVR, the Prime Minister emphasized that continued reforms are necessary irrespective of who assumes power.

He pointed to recent fiscal management, noting that public budget revenues had risen by 12% and expenditures had decreased by 3% following the introduction of strict austerity measures ten months prior. Bolojan defended his governance style, explaining that previous state budgeting had often been used inefficiently. He asserted that he took measures to establish financial discipline, focusing spending on areas generating substantial losses.

He indicated that he became a target precisely because he resisted becoming a compliant leader and actively blocked the alleged misuse of public funds. When questioned about a potential bid for the presidency, Bolojan responded that he remains an active individual committed to serving Romania’s best interests, suggesting that he could have sought the office when the political opportunity presented itself. The no-confidence vote is scheduled for May 5 and was initiated by the PSD, the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), and the MIR parliamentary group.

This action followed the withdrawal of support from the PSD, which was the largest party within the ruling four-party coalition that formed the current government.
