PM Says His Party May Stay in Government If No-Confidence Motion Passes

Romanian Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan stated on Thursday that should a motion of no confidence against his administration pass, the primary course of action for his National Liberal Party (PNL) would be to remain within the executive branch, provided it is outside a coalition with the Social Democratic Party (PSD). However, Bolojan did not rule out a scenario where the PNL shifts to the opposition to establish a “pole of modernization” alongside other political groups. Speaking to Romanian public television TVR, the Prime Minister asserted that the continuation of reforms is necessary regardless of the composition of the next governing body.

He highlighted recent fiscal improvements, noting that public budget revenues have increased by 12% and expenditures have decreased by 3% since the implementation of austerity measures ten months ago. Bolojan explained that past state budget practices were often used for inefficient administrations and incomplete projects, necessitating strict controls. He stated that he became a focus of opposition precisely because he resisted compliance and blocked the misuse of public funds.

When questioned about a potential presidential run, Bolojan responded that he remains an active figure committed to doing what is best for Romania, suggesting that he could have sought the office when the political timing was more opportune. The no-confidence vote is scheduled for May 5th and has been tabled by the PSD, the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), and the MIR parliamentary group. This action followed the PSD’s withdrawal of support from the Prime Minister, who leads the PNL.

The current coalition government, which includes the PSD, PNL, USR, and UDMR, took office last year.
