Romanian Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan stated on Thursday that should a no-confidence motion against his government pass, the primary course of action for his National Liberal Party (PNL) would be to remain in the administration, but without a coalition arrangement with the Social Democratic Party (PSD). However, Bolojan indicated that the PNL is not ruling out the possibility of entering opposition to establish an alternative “pole of modernization” with other political forces. Speaking in an interview with Romanian public television TVR, the Prime Minister emphasized that reforms must continue regardless of who assumes power.
He cited economic data, noting that public budget revenues have risen by 12% and expenditures have decreased by 3% over the past 10 months following the introduction of strict austerity measures. Bolojan criticized past fiscal practices, stating that the state budget was frequently misused by inefficient administrations and for delayed projects. He explained that he implemented necessary controls, comparing the process to a family managing finances during significant, unavoidable payments.
He asserted that he became a target because his refusal to be a compliant prime minister and his blocking of public fund misuse were necessary actions. When questioned about running for President in the next elections, Bolojan stated that he remains an active individual committed to doing what is right for Romania, adding that his potential candidacy could have occurred when opportunities arose. The no-confidence vote against his government is scheduled for May 5th.
The motion was filed by the PSD, the opposition far-right Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), and the parliamentary group MIR – Romania First. This follows the PSD’s withdrawal of support from the Prime Minister, who leads the PNL.
