PM Says His Party May Stay in Government If No-Confidence Motion Passes

Romanian Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan stated on Thursday that if a no-confidence motion against his administration passes, his National Liberal Party’s (PNL) primary consideration would be to remain in the government, but explicitly not within a coalition with the Social Democratic Party (PSD). Nevertheless, Bolojan indicated that the PNL could transition to opposition, explore alternative partnerships, and form a “pole of modernization” with other political entities. Speaking to Romanian public television TVR, the Prime Minister emphasized that reforms must continue regardless of which political group assumes power.

He pointed to budgetary data, noting that public revenue had increased by 12% and expenditures had decreased by 3% over the past ten months following the implementation of strict austerity measures. Bolojan criticized past fiscal management, stating that the state budget was historically misused by inefficient administrations and for incomplete projects. He explained that he was compelled to implement rigorous financial controls, comparing the process to a family managing significant finances.

He asserted that his opposition to compliant governance and his efforts to prevent the misuse of public funds were the reasons for becoming a political target. When questioned about running for President in upcoming elections, Bolojan responded that he remains an active individual committed to acting in Romania’s best interest. He added that he could have sought the presidency when the opportunity presented itself.

The no-confidence vote, scheduled for May 5, was initiated by the PSD, the opposition far-right Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), and the parliamentary group MIR – Romania First. This action followed the PSD’s withdrawal of support from the Prime Minister, who leads his party.
