PM Says His Party May Stay in Government If No-Confidence Motion Passes

Romanian Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan stated on Thursday that should a motion of no confidence pass against his administration, the primary path for his National Liberal Party (PNL) would be to remain in the government, but outside of a coalition involving the Social Democratic Party (PSD). However, Bolojan indicated that the PNL could also shift into opposition to establish a “pole of modernization” alongside other political entities. Speaking in an interview with TVR, the Prime Minister emphasized that continued reforms are necessary regardless of which political group assumes power.

He cited economic indicators, noting that after ten months of strict austerity measures, public budget revenues had increased by 12%, while expenditures decreased by 3%. Bolojan explained that he implemented these measures because, historically, the state budget was misused by inefficient administrations. He stated that he had to establish strict rules, much like a family managing finances during significant payments, focusing spending on areas that were generating substantial losses.

He added that he had become a focal point because he refused to act as a compliant Prime Minister and actively blocked the misuse of public funds. Regarding future ambitions, when questioned about running for President, Bolojan responded that he remains an active individual committed to what is best for Romania, suggesting he could have sought the position when the opportunity arose. The no-confidence vote is scheduled for May 5, having been tabled by the PSD, the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), and the MIR parliamentary group.

This action followed the withdrawal of support by the PSD—the largest party in the ruling four-party coalition—from the PNL-led government.
