Acting Interior Minister Emil Dechev stated on Friday that officials were allegedly employing established tactics to undermine and neutralize Georgi Kandev, the acting Secretary General of the Interior Ministry. Earlier in the day, Kandev had reported that he faced pressure to resign due to individuals filing false testimony against him at the Sofia City Prosecution Office. The tension escalated when acting Prime Minister Andrey Gurov issued a statement characterizing the situation as a “shameful attempt at revanchism.” Gurov noted that this alleged conspiracy against the Secretary General surfaced after efforts were made to halt attacks on democracy and recover millions of euros intended to undermine elections.
Dechev publicly voiced support for Kandev, asserting his belief in his integrity. He added that the future minister would face significant responsibility in resolving what he termed a “fabricated scandal.” The acting Minister also addressed the broader efforts of the caretaker Government and the interior Ministry, claiming that within two months, they had successfully minimized electoral crimes, which he described as a threat to Bulgarian democracy. In his remarks, dechev stated that achieving this involved significant effort and resolve against forces he characterized as seeking to subvert the will of the citizenry during elections.
He further alleged that the opposition had powerful allies positioned within the judiciary.
