Dechev: “Old Cops Are Using Dirty Tricks to Neutralize Interior Ministry’s Secretary General”

Acting Interior Minister Emil Dechev accused elements within the police force of employing “dirty tricks” to undermine and neutralize Georgi Kandev, the acting Secretary General of the Interior Ministry. These remarks followed statements from Kandev, who claimed in a video message that he faced pressure to resign due to individuals presenting false testimony against him at the Sofia City Prosecution Office. Adding to the political tension, acting Prime Minister Andrey Gurov characterized the situation as a “shameful attempt at revanchism.” Gurov stated that following actions taken to curb attacks on democracy and seize funds misused during elections, a conspiracy against the Secretary General had emerged.

Dechev publicly expressed his support for Kandev, asserting his confidence in his integrity. He noted that the Ministry of the Interior, under the guidance of the acting government, had demonstrated significant resolve over the past two months in limiting electoral crimes, which he termed a “plague on Bulgarian democracy.”

The acting Interior Minister further alleged that in this effort, their adversaries had secured powerful allies within the judiciary. Dechev emphasized that the struggle against subverting the will of the Bulgarian citizenry during elections required “great effort, courage, and uncompromising resolve.” The statements collectively highlight ongoing disputes regarding internal ministry operations and the handling of electoral misconduct within the country’s political sphere.
