Without Borders Observes Deterioration of Media Freedom Across Most Balkan Countries

Reporters Without Borders’ annual World Press Freedom Index indicates a general decline in media freedom across most countries in the Balkan region. While some nations show progress, the overall trend points to increasing challenges for journalists. Kosovo stands out for significant improvement, rising 15 spots, though it remains among the lowest-ranked European nations.

Croatia, Romania, and Greece also reported gains, contrasting with declines seen in countries like Bulgaria, which dropped to 71st place, and Albania, which fell to 83rd. Slovenia continues to lead the region with the best media environment at 36th place, though the organization noted lingering concerns regarding defamation laws and government pressure. Other countries face varied challenges; for instance, North Macedonia struggles with widespread disinformation undermining public trust in independent media.

Several systemic issues threaten press freedom across these countries. In Romania, while the media landscape is diverse, concerns persist regarding the transparency of public funding and political interference in state broadcasters. Montenegro, despite constitutional guarantees, still faces threats from political interference and economic pressure.

The report highlights that political intimidation, legal action against outlets, and the manipulation of media are common practices. The index reveals that while some countries have made strides, the fundamental protection of journalistic freedom remains fragile due to political and economic pressures across the region.
