Acting Interior Minister Emil Dechev publicly accused “old cops” of employing tactics to undermine and neutralize Georgi Kandev, the acting Secretary General of the Interior Ministry, in a Facebook post on Friday. Earlier that day, Kandev stated in a video message that he faced pressure to resign due to false testimony being presented against him at the Sofia City Prosecution Office. Acting Prime Minister Andrey Gurov also addressed the situation via video, labeling the attempts as a “shameful attempt at revanchism.” Gurov stated that a conspiracy against the Secretary General had emerged after efforts were made to halt attacks on democracy and seize millions of euros used to undermine elections.
Dechev expressed his full support for Kandev, asserting confidence in his integrity. He noted that the future interior minister would soon assume significant responsibility in resolving what he termed a “fabricated scandal.” Dechev further highlighted the efforts of the caretaker Government and the Interior Ministry over the past two months to minimize electoral crimes, which he described as a “plague on Bulgarian democracy.” He attributed this success to significant effort and resolve, characterizing the struggle against forces attempting to subvert the will of the Bulgarian citizens during elections. Dechev concluded by suggesting that the adversary in this effort possessed powerful allies within the judiciary.
