A national commemorative assembly marking the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising is scheduled to take place at the Prof. Marin Drinov Hall of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) on Monday. The event is held under the patronage of President Iliana Iotova.
The day’s observances begin at 10:00 am with a memorial prayer service for the victims of the April Uprising at St Alexander Nevsky Memorial Cathedral in Sofia. Following the service, representatives from the academic community will join a procession led by President Iotova and Patriarch Daniil toward the BAS building. The national commemorative assembly will officially open with remarks from BAS President Evelina Slavcheva, followed by a blessing from Patriarch Daniil.
Prof. Georgi Valchev, Rector of Sofia University, is slated to address the gathering. Academician Ivan Ilchev will present a keynote report titled, “The Uprising That Returned Bulgaria to the Map of Europe.” President Iotova will also deliver a welcoming speech.
The event is organized by Corresponding Member Atanas Semov of the Assembly of Academicians and Corresponding Members of BAS. To mark this significant anniversary, a National Initiative Committee was established through the efforts of the Assembly of Academicians and Corresponding Members, alongside the leadership of BAS. BAS has also issued a national calendar of events detailing the various commemorative activities for all participants and organizers.
