A national commemorative assembly marking the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising is scheduled to take place at the Prof. Marin Drinov Hall of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) on Monday. The event is held under the patronage of President Iliana Iotova.
The day’s proceedings begin at 10:00 am with a memorial prayer service for the victims of the April Uprising at Sofia’s St Alexander Nevsky Memorial Cathedral, officiated by Bulgarian Patriarch and Metropolitan of Sofia, Daniil. Following the service, representatives from the academic community will join a procession led by President Iotova and Patriarch Daniil to the BAS building. The national commemorative assembly will officially open with remarks from BAS President Evelina Slavcheva, followed by a blessing from Patriarch Daniil and an address from Sofia University Rector Prof.
Georgi Valchev. Academician Ivan Ilchev is slated to present the keynote report, “The Uprising That Returned Bulgaria to the Map of Europe.” President Iotova will also deliver a welcoming speech. The event is organized by Corresponding Member Atanas Semov of the Assembly of Academicians and Corresponding Members of BAS.
To mark this significant milestone, a National Initiative Committee was established through the efforts of the Assembly of Academicians and Corresponding Members, in collaboration with the leadership of BAS. Furthermore, BAS has issued a national calendar of events for all participants and organizers involved in the commemorative activities in Sofia.
