Caretaker Economy and Industry Minister Irina Shtonova addressed the National Council of the Bulgarian Association of Industrial Capital, detailing the government’s efforts to support businesses amid periods of global uncertainty. The Economy Ministry reported that significant work was conducted with industry stakeholders to identify and implement necessary support measures. Shtonova noted that early policy adjustments were required, citing the initial calculation of monthly compensation for businesses based on electricity costs, which was found to be ineffective when calculated over six-month periods.
She confirmed that this mechanism was quickly revised to a monthly calculation. Furthermore, the Minister highlighted the importance of the European Commission’s approval of temporary state aid, allocating EUR 334 million over three years to maintain the economic viability of energy-intensive enterprises. To mitigate the impact of the Middle East conflict on the wider economy, the ministry has introduced targeted measures designed to avoid inflationary pressure.
Specific support has been provided to the transportation sector and agricultural producers, including guarantees for their lease agreements, allowing payment deferrals until the end of the year. Additionally, the planned increases in toll fees affecting all economic sectors have been postponed. The Minister emphasized that continuous dialogue between the ministry and employers is paramount to sound decision-making.
She stressed that this collaborative engagement remains a top priority for the government’s ongoing efforts to stabilize the industrial landscape.
