The Bulgarian Telegraph Agency (BTA) has launched a nationwide series of discussions commemorating the 160th birth anniversary of the poet Pencho Slaveykov and examining the period of Bulgarian modernism. The inaugural event, titled “Pencho Slaveykov Today,” is being held in his hometown of Tryavna at the Slaveykov House Museum. Moderated by literary scholar Yordan Eftimov, the initiative aims to facilitate reflection on the role of Pencho Slaveykov and his modernist contemporaries, including members of the “Misal” literary circle.
Eftimov stated the campaign intends to reach all 45 BTA press clubs, including 33 located within Bulgaria. Participants are expected to include literary researchers, educators, archivists, and writers. The broader goal, according to Eftimov, is to encourage Bulgarian society to engage with its own history through Slaveykov’s legacy, mirroring a previous successful commemorative effort dedicated to Aleko Konstantinov.
The discussions are structured to prompt writers to consider how Slaveykov influenced their own work and how studying his poetry shaped their literary development. The campaign’s scope will also be reflected in the December issue of LIK magazine, which will feature reports from the discussions and a special section containing 160 individual contributions.

It’s great to see such a comprehensive commemoration of both Slaveykov and the era of Bulgarian modernism.
