Opens National Series on Pencho Slaveykov and Bulgarian Modernism with Event in Tryavna

BTA is initiating a nationwide series of discussions across its national press clubs commemorating the 160th birth anniversary of Bulgarian poet Pencho Slaveykov and the era of Bulgarian modernism. The inaugural event, titled “Pencho Slaveykov Today,” will take place in his hometown of Tryavna at the Slaveykov House Museum. The initiative, moderated by literary scholar Yordan Eftimov, will also host the town’s mayor, Dencho Minev.

The commemoration will be reflected in the December issue of LIK magazine, which will feature reports from the discussions and a special section comprising 160 individual contributions of 160 words each, mirroring a previous tribute to Aleko Konstantinov. Eftimov stated that the campaign will explore the role of Pencho Slaveykov and his contemporaries, including members of the “Misal” literary circle, who contributed to modernizing Bulgaria’s European cultural identity. The discussions, which will span all 45 BTA press clubs, aim to prompt societal reflection on Slaveykov’s enduring legacy.

Participants, including researchers, educators, and writers, are encouraged to examine how his works shaped their own artistic development. The broader goal, according to Eftimov, is to demonstrate BTA’s capacity to generate dialogue and self-awareness by highlighting how major intellectuals remain relevant in the national cultural memory. Pencho Slaveykov (1866–1912) was a significant figure in Bulgarian literature.

Despite becoming seriously ill at age seventeen, his worldview was shaped by influences such as Henrik Ibsen and Friedrich Nietzsche. He produced both lyrical poetry and socio-critical works, reinforcing his democratic principles. After studying philosophy in Leipzig, he returned to Bulgaria, where he served in various cultural roles and became associated with the “Misul” literary group.
