Daniil: April Uprising Birthed Not Only Unparalleled Heroism but Also Martyrdom for Faith

On the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising, Bulgarian Patriarch and Metropolitan of Sofia Daniil officiated a memorial service for the victims, including priests and laypeople, at Sofia’s St Alexander Nevsky Memorial Cathedral. Speaking to journalists, Patriarch Daniil noted that the April Uprising represented not only significant heroism but also instances of martyrdom for the faith. He stated that during the difficult period of the uprising, many ancestors faced a choice, ultimately choosing their Orthodox faith and spiritual beliefs.

During the service, the Church honored the heroes of the uprising, offering prayers for all who perished for their faith and for the nation’s freedom. Daniil added that the self-sacrifice of these individuals drew attention beyond the region, reaching international public opinion and appealing for divine mercy. In his blessing, the Patriarch invoked the prayers of the martyrs of the April Uprising, praying for the preservation of the Orthodox faith, which he cited as fundamental to Bulgaria’s endurance.

The memorial service was attended by President Iliana Iotova, caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gurov, President of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) Evelina Slavcheva, and representatives from various political parties and academic communities. Following the ceremony, Patriarch Daniil and President Iotova led a procession to the BAS building for a national commemorative assembly marking the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising. The event was held under the auspices of the Presidency.
