University Rector Highlights Critical Thinking at DisInfoHack 2026

At the conclusion of the DisInfoHack 2026 event at the Sofia University’s GATE Institute on Monday, the institution’s rector, Prof. Georgi Valchev, emphasized the necessity for young people to cultivate robust critical thinking skills. According to the rector, developing this aptitude is crucial for distinguishing verifiable information from misleading content in the current information landscape.

Valchev stated that initiatives like DisInfoHack are vital for bridging the gap between established facts and deliberate manipulation. He stressed that the youth must prepare for the complexities of the modern era and actively contribute to building a resilient information environment. Furthermore, he cautioned that even content originating from reliable sources can occasionally be repurposed as disinformation.

DisInfoHack is part of a larger effort known as the Countering Disinformation Environment (Ecosystem) in Bulgaria (CoDE). This project aims to strengthen information resilience through a systematic, scientific approach. The undertaking is managed by the university through the GATE Institute, involving the European Studies Department of the Faculty of Philosophy and the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration.

These efforts are conducted in collaboration with the Institute of Information and Communication Technologies at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and the European Software Institute. The overarching goal is to equip the public with the tools necessary to navigate the challenges presented by today’s saturated media environment.
