Employment at AES Galabovo Power Plant Will Depend on Evolving Operations, AES Bulgaria Says

AES Bulgaria announced on Friday that it must initiate a controlled and safe shutdown of the TPP AES Galabovo facility, moving the plant into a conservation mode. This action follows the expiration of the long-term power purchase agreement between TPP AES Galabovo and the National Electricity Company (NEK). The company stated that this measured approach is necessary to safeguard the plant assets and preserve potential future operational opportunities, particularly in light of recent reports regarding potential mass layoffs at the facility.

AES emphasized that future employment at the plant will depend on its evolving operational status, assuring stakeholders that the company has maintained transparency with its workforce throughout the conservation process. Furthermore, AES Bulgaria confirmed that it has promptly notified Mini Maritsa-East, as the contract supplying lignite coal for electricity generation is concurrently set to expire. In its official statement, AES noted that it is actively engaged in discussions with Bulgarian authorities and relevant stakeholders.

These ongoing dialogues aim to identify existing development opportunities that could enable the AES Galabovo Thermal Power Plant to continue supporting Bulgaria’s energy security and grid reliability. The company also clarified that these operational adjustments do not impact the Saint Nikola Wind Farm, which remains part of the investor’s portfolio. AES’s communication underscores its commitment to navigating the necessary transitions while exploring avenues to sustain the plant’s role within the national energy infrastructure.
