Mayor: Terminal 3 of Sofia Airport Could Become Symbol of Returning to Bulgaria

The planned construction of a new Terminal 3 at Vasil Levski Sofia Airport represents one of Bulgaria’s major planned infrastructure investments. According to details released by Sofia Mayor Vassil Terziev, the new facility is envisioned as a significant catalyst for development in the capital city. The project scope includes a new terminal spanning approximately 65,000 square meters.

This new structure is designed to integrate with the existing Terminal 2 and incorporate a modern transport hub, alongside improved connections to the wider city of Sofia. Functionally, the terminal is projected to handle up to 20 million passengers annually. Construction is slated to begin within the coming years, with an anticipated completion timeframe around 2030–2031.

Beyond its physical scale, the project is framed as an economic symbol for Bulgaria, intended to enhance the country’s appeal to residents and businesses. The procurement process for the development is underway. In November 2025, SOF Connect announced the commencement of the pre-qualification stage for the tender.

This tender covers the design and construction of the new Terminal 3, the associated forecourt area, the transport center, and the modernization of the existing Terminal 2 facilities. The development is positioned not only as an upgrade to the airport’s physical infrastructure but also as a centerpiece for attracting future economic opportunity to the region.
