On the occasion commemorating the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising, Bulgarian Patriarch and Metropolitan of Sofia Daniil officiated a memorial service for the fallen priests and laypeople at Sofia’s St Alexander Nevsky Memorial Cathedral on Monday. Speaking to journalists, Patriarch Daniil noted that the uprising represented not only exceptional heroism but also martyrdom for the faith. He stated that during the period following the uprising, many ancestors faced a choice, ultimately selecting their Orthodox faith and spiritual convictions.
The Patriarch affirmed that the Church commemorates the heroes of the April Uprising by offering prayers for those who perished for both faith and national freedom. He added that the self-sacrifice of these individuals successfully drew attention not only from European and global public opinion and the great powers of the time but also toward divine mercy. In his address, Daniil emphasized that the Orthodox faith imparts values such as valor, honesty, courage, and sacrificial love, which he cited as essential for Bulgaria’s endurance.
The memorial service was attended by numerous figures, including President Iliana Iotova, caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gurov, the President of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS), and representatives from various political parties and the academic community. Following the ceremony, Patriarch Daniil and President Iotova led a procession to the BAS building for a national commemorative assembly marking the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising, an event held under the President’s auspices.
