Ministry Secretary General “Under Pressure”, Politicians See Revenge for Crackdown on Electoral Crime

Georgi Kandev, the acting Secretary General of the Ministry of Interior, stated on Friday that he had faced pressure. In a video posted to Facebook, Kandev recounted receiving multiple calls on Thursday, allegedly urging him to “go home.” He claimed that he was informed via hidden mobile numbers that an individual known as “Kartofa” and associates were providing false testimony against him at the Sofia City Prosecution Office (SCPO). Kandev alleged that this effort was organized by a former official from the Interior Ministry named “Svetlyo.”

Kandev questioned the SCPO about the validity of testimony provided by “convicted and criminally charged individuals” and sought to understand the motives behind the alleged pressure.

Prime Minister Andrey Gurov publicly backed the acting Secretary General, describing the situation as a “vendetta” occurring at the SCPO. Gurov criticized the actions of prosecutor Emilia Rusinova and associated figures, suggesting they were involved in undermining democratic processes. Interior Minister Emil Dechev also expressed support for Kandev, alleging that elements within the police force were employing unethical tactics to undermine the ministry.

Political opposition weighed in on the controversy. Assen Vassilev criticized the threats against Kandev as scandalous, advocating for judicial reform. Meanwhile, the Yes, Bulgaria party accused the prosecution service of being utilized to target officials engaged in institutional reform, suggesting a pattern of political misuse within the justice system.
