The Social Democratic Party (PSD) and the opposition far-right Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) have announced a joint effort to table a no-confidence motion against the Government led by Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan. This development followed the resignation of several PSD ministers on April 23. In a joint statement issued Monday, the PSD asserted that the resignations formalized the party’s withdrawal of political support from Mr.
Bolojan. The PSD stated that the Prime Minister consequently lacked the necessary parliamentary majority and, therefore, the democratic mandate to lead the government. Meanwhile, AUR representatives clarified that their cooperation with the PSD was limited solely to the no-confidence proposal, noting that the AUR’s ultimate political objective is to precipitate early elections, citing the current government’s inability to manage the national economy.
Prime Minister Bolojan rejected the move, declaring his intention to remain in office and continue fulfilling his mandate while working toward establishing a minority government. Amid the political instability, President Nicusor Dan convened talks with leaders from the ruling coalition during the week of April 20–26. The President indicated that the administration had ruled out governance involving anti-Western factions, specifically naming AUR.
Furthermore, the President expressed a willingness to collaborate on significant national projects, including the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, OECD accession, and the EU defense instrument SAFE. These key programs remain central to ongoing consultations hosted by the President with all governing coalition parties.
