Is an Ongoing Process, GATE Director Says

During the closing event of DisInfoHack 2026 at Sofia University St Kliment Ohridski, Prof. Sylvia Ilieva, Director of the GATE Institute, stated that disinformation should be viewed not as a crisis, but as a constant and evolving process. She emphasized that the foundational goal of the CoDE project was to establish a sustainable network and ecosystem dedicated to countering misinformation.

Prof. Ilieva noted that while this objective appeared large-scale initially, the collaborative efforts of the partners have successfully materialized it into a tangible framework. She highlighted that contemporary disinformation tactics have expanded beyond mere text, now incorporating images, video, and content generated by artificial intelligence, which accelerates dissemination and complicates mitigation efforts.

According to Prof. Ilieva, structured initiatives like DisInfoHack are crucial for developing sustainable countermeasures. These events function by having participants analyze real-world cases and tackle complex issues through collaboration with experts spanning journalism, technology, and various institutions.

This cross-sector interaction, she explained, is vital for building a robust ecosystem of necessary knowledge and skills required to combat disinformation effectively. The overarching CoDE project aims to strengthen information resilience through scientific research by analyzing Bulgaria’s information environment and compiling best practices. Prof.

Ilieva concluded by expressing optimism that the initiative will continue to expand its reach and engage more participants annually.
