Literature on the Rise, Bulgarian Book Association Deputy Chair Says

Bulgarian literature is experiencing a period of growth, according to Gergana Dimitrova, Deputy Chair of the Bulgarian Book Association. Dimitrova discussed Bulgaria’s upcoming role as the guest of honor at the 22nd Thessaloniki International Book Fair, taking place from May 7 to 10. She attributed much of the recent international visibility to the success of authors like Georgi Gospodinov and the attention garnered by Rene Karabash for the Booker Prize.

Furthermore, Dimitrova highlighted the establishment of the Sofia Literary Agency as a vital resource connecting Bulgarian writers with foreign publishing houses. In her view, this upward trend in Bulgarian literature stems not only from recent successes but also from the inherent diversity and unique characteristics within the country’s literary output, much of which remains underexposed internationally. At the Thessaloniki Book Fair, a wide array of talent will be featured, including children’s authors Kapka Kaneva and Zornitsa Hristova, alongside prominent writers such as Rene Karabash and Alexandar Sekulov.

The event will also showcase several translators. The guiding slogan for Bulgaria’s participation is “Literature Without Borders,” emphasizing the exchange of literary works across the Balkans. Dimitrova noted that the participation aims to further facilitate the publication of Bulgarian authors in Greece, building on established cross-cultural literary exchanges.

The festival’s engagement will conclude with a concert featuring pianist Svetlin Roussev and the Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra on May 10.
