Literature on the Rise, Bulgarian Book Association Deputy Chair Says

According to Gergana Dimitrova, Deputy Chair of the Bulgarian Book Association, Bulgarian literature is currently undergoing a period of significant growth. Speaking on Monday, she highlighted the nation’s upcoming participation as the guest of honor at the 22nd Thessaloniki International Book Fair, scheduled for May 7-10. Dimitrova attributed this international visibility partly to the global success of authors like Georgi Gospodinov and the attention received by Rene Karabash for the Booker Prize.

She also emphasized the establishment of the Sofia Literary Agency, which she credited with greatly improving connections between Bulgarian writers and foreign publishers. In her view, the momentum behind this rise in Bulgarian literature stems not only from recent successes but also from the inherent stylistic diversity within the country’s literary tradition, much of which is awaiting international presentation. At the Thessaloniki Book Fair, a wide array of authors and translators will be featured.

Participants include children’s authors Kapka Kaneva and Zornitsa Hristova, alongside notable figures such as Rene Karabash, Alexandar Sekulov, and others. The focus of Bulgaria’s participation is encapsulated by the slogan, “Literature Without Borders,” which aims to demonstrate the ease of literary exchange within the Balkans. Dimitrova noted that the event will facilitate further publication opportunities, as many Greek authors have previously been published in Bulgaria, and vice versa.

The Bulgarian presence at the fair is expected to further solidify these cross-border publishing links. The festival will conclude on May 10 with a concert featuring music by Pancho Wladigeroff, Nikos Skalkottas, and Camille Saint-Saens.
