Slaveykov Calls for Living Approach to Literary Tradition, Says Poet Yordan Eftimov

Poet, literary scholar, and critic Yordan Eftimov advocated for a living, dynamic approach to literary tradition during an event in Tryavna on Monday. He addressed the launch of a nationwide discussion series marking the 160th birth anniversary of the prominent Bulgarian poet Pencho Slaveykov and celebrating Bulgarian modernism, an initiative organized by BTA. Eftimov characterized Slaveykov not only as a major author but also as a significant public figure.

He stated that such cultural initiatives are crucial for reviving the authentic memory of great cultural figures, cautioning against the trend of modern education reducing these individuals to mere stereotypes. Furthermore, he warned against the tendency to treat writers as “lifeless idols,” echoing Slaveykov’s concept of “petrification.”

A key objective of these discussions, Eftimov noted, is to generate a self-portrait of the nation through fresh interpretations of established works, thereby aiding the Bulgarian populace in self-understanding. He emphasized BTA’s role in disseminating accurate information and expert perspectives amid widespread misinformation.

The expert added that the agency’s expanding network will provide a comprehensive view of how Slaveykov is remembered across Bulgaria and how his ideas continue to influence discourse. He highlighted Slaveykov’s dual function as both a modernizer and Europeanizer, suggesting that contemporary attitudes toward him serve as a reflection of Bulgaria’s own developmental trajectory within the literary landscape. Eftimov stressed the necessity of maintaining a vibrant engagement with the works of Slaveykov.
