The latest issue of BTA’s LIK magazine focuses on the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising in 1876. The Bulgarian News Agency’s thematic publication explores the uprising through its archives, incorporating historical records and details of commemorations held over the years within BTA’s news service and bulletins. The issue also features commentary from educators, public figures, and local representatives from the revolutionary districts associated with the uprising’s history.
The launch event for the magazine is scheduled for Monday, April 20, at the St. Cyril and Methodius School in Koprivshtitsa, marked as the Day of the First Shot. This event will be jointly broadcast via video link with BTA’s national press clubs both in Bulgaria and internationally.
Collaborating partners include the Koprivshtitsa Municipality and the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, which is also releasing its own publication on the 150th Anniversary. BTA Director General Kiril Valchev noted that the issue summarizes discussions held at national press clubs and in the centers of the four revolutionary districts: Veliko Tarnovo, Sliven, Vratsa, and Panagyurishte. He emphasized that while the uprising faced setbacks, its ultimate outcome was Bulgaria’s freedom.
Journalist Boyko Vassilev stated that discussions about the April Uprising remain relevant to understanding contemporary Bulgaria. Contributions highlight the youth of the uprising’s leaders, with Prof. Georgi Valchev discussing how they prioritized freedom—a choice to “be”—over material security.
Prof. Atanas Semov argues that the April Uprising represents the greatest collective effort of the Bulgarian people. The LIK magazine includes a thematic timeline compiling archival reports from BTA, spanning from its founding in 1898 to the present.
The publication also references past commemorations and details future events marking the 150th anniversary.
