Energy Minister Highlights Importance of Energy Infrastructure and Supply Contracts in Delphi

During his participation in the 11th Delphi Economic Forum in Delphi, Greece, Caretaker Energy Minister Traicho Traikov emphasized the critical role of robust energy infrastructure and stable supply contracts. Traikov noted that recent global instability, marked by conflicts, has heightened the demand for energy security. He stated that for net energy consumers, this translates directly to supply security, while for exporters, it means market assurance, citing the situation in the Strait of Hormuz as a prime example of this necessity.

Traikov highlighted Bulgaria’s preparedness, attributing the nation’s resilience to years of infrastructure development. These improvements include an interconnector with Greece, expanded capacity with Turkey, and interconnectors with Romania and Serbia, alongside an expansion at Sidirokastro in Greece. These developments, he stated, enhance the country’s flexibility regarding energy routes.

The minister also underscored the commercial necessity of formal agreements for energy quantities. He referenced a significant 15-year contract with Azerbaijan for its stable pricing and guaranteed volumes. Looking forward, the potential for liquefied natural gas imports and the development of the Vertical Gas Corridor—which routes gas from the Eastern Mediterranean through Bulgaria and Romania to Ukraine—were emphasized.

Traikov asserted that Bulgaria holds a key role in regional initiatives, committing the nation to deriving maximum benefit from these processes to secure better energy prices for its consumers. The Delphi Economic Forum, which runs through April 25, is a major international event featuring discussions on geopolitics, economy, and technological transformation involving global governmental, academic, and business representatives.
